Is this person really an animal lover if he admits to something like this?

I have a workmate who says he's an animal lover. But the thing is... he admits that he throws live mice on glue traps into the bin, and is fully aware that they can suffer on them for 3 - 4 days. What kind of "animal lover" is he? Or is he just deluding himself?
